ADHD in Boys
ADHD can affect both boys and girls, but historically, ADHD has been diagnosed more often in boys than in girls. We now understand that ADHD can present differently in boys and girls, which may contribute to the difference in diagnosis rates.
Whilst girls with ADHD may be less likely to display hyperactive and impulsive behaviours, boys with ADHD may exhibit symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, and trouble with focus and attention. They may also be more likely to engage in physically active and impulsive behaviours that are noticeable in a school or home environment.
Symptoms of ADHD in Boys
The symptoms of ADHD can vary from person to person, but when it comes to boys, the following are some symptoms that are often observed
It's also crucial to remember that not every child with ADHD will exhibit all these symptoms, and the severity and combination of symptoms can vary.
Inattention
Boys with ADHD may have difficulty paying attention to details or making careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities. They may also have trouble sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, and struggle with frequent forgetfulness in daily activities and tasks. Boys with ADHD may have difficulty organising tasks and activities, and may avoid or be reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort.
Hyperactivity
Boys with ADHD may fidget or tap their hands or feet. They may also be unable to stay seated in situations where it's expected. Running or climbing in inappropriate situations is a common trait in boys with ADHD. They may also struggle to play or engage in activities quietly, and may talk excessively.
Impulsivity
Boys with ADHD may exhibit impatience and have difficulty waiting their turn. They may also âblurt outâ answers or interrupt conversations or games. Impulsive decision-making without considering the consequences is another common trait in boys with ADHD. They may also have difficulty with impulse control.
How ADHD can affect boys' lives
ADHD often coexists with other conditions, such as learning disabilities, anxiety, and depression.
Not all boys with ADHD will display the same symptoms or severity. Diagnosis and treatment should be tailored to each child's specific needs. It's important for parents, teachers, and healthcare providers to be informed about ADHD and its potential manifestations in both boys and girls. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help children with ADHD, regardless of their gender, manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Through our own individual experiences, we found that the assessment process offered by the majority was lacking: it wasn't comprehensive or robust enough, and we didn't feel enough time was spent on each person. Thatâs why we offer services that other ADHD clinics donât, throughout our entire process.
Full support following diagnosis.
Our psychiatrists are keen to advise on adjustments for school, work, or university to help their patients to excel whatever their stage of life. Bespoke medication
care pathway
We offer a supportive medication care plan to people where medication therapy is clinically recommended.
We will initiate and titrate medication over the course of the next few months until we agree on the optimum dose of the medication which feels right for you. We will always prescribe medications based on best available evidence and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.
We offer medication reviews monthly to ensure we can monitor your physical and mental health as well as reviewing your response to medication.
We use objective outcome measures to gain a greater understanding of symptom control over time. This helps guide our decisions about what medication and what dose suits you better. Our main focus however is to be guided by your experiences. We will listen to your experiences and deliver a medication care plan to suit your needs.
Once optimised and stabilised on medication we can either request that your GP take over prescribing with a shared care agreement, or you can continue to access prescriptions from Veyra Healthcare. Whichever option you choose, you will receive annual clinical reviews to ensure your medication remains effective and your health is not negatively impacted.
